1. Regularly Brush Your Teeth

It might go without saying but, the cornerstone of good dental hygiene is regularly brushing your teeth. Brushing removes food particles in between teeth that bacteria feed on. Brushing for at least two minutes ensures clean teeth and fresh breath. With little ones, we like to have them think/sing the happy birthday song twice as a timer. Use toothpaste with fluoride because this will help strengthen your teeth. To make brushing a lot easier, you can use an electric toothbrush with a built-in two-minute timer.

2. Floss Daily

Brushing alone won’t totally remove food debris in hard-to-reach areas in your teeth. As such, flossing is important. It helps remove plaque and bacteria in between your teeth, thus preventing gum disease. Floss at least once a day, preferably before bedtime. Your mouth produces less saliva when you sleep, which can leave your mouth to be vulnerable to bacteria.

3. Follow a Healthy Diet

Consider including lots of dairy and calcium-rich foods in your diet. Calcium will help maintain strong teeth and bones. Also, the vitamin C in citrus fruits enhances gum health.

It is also crucial that you avoid eating those that can harm your teeth and mouth. These include sticky and sugary foods. As bacteria feed on sugars, they release acids that can lead to cavities. If you want to eat sweets, make sure to immediately brush after eating or rinse your mouth with water.

4. Don’t Use Tobacco

People who use tobacco are more likely to suffer from gum disease than those who do not. The use of tobacco refers both to smoking and chewing tobacco. Tobacco products will increase your risk for oral cancers. On a smaller scale, tobacco will contribute to halitosis or bad breath.

5. Whiten your Teeth

Teeth whitening is a safe procedure that won’t harm your teeth, provided though that the product is used as directed and you are under the supervision of a dentist. For minor staining, over-the-counter whitening products are effective, but for severe cases, professional whitening products are recommended. Prior to undergoing any whitening procedure, you must speak to your dentist to ensure that your gums and teeth are healthy.

6. Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Thorough dental cleaning is important to ensure good dental health, so make sure to visit your dentist at least twice a year. Early signs of dental problems like gum disease can also be detected during your visit. When you are prone to cavities and gum disease, you must visit your dentist at least once every four months.
