Did you know that February is National Children's Dental Health Month?
This article is part one of a three-part series about the National Children's Dental Health Month.
Every February, the American Dental Association sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month with the purpose of raising awareness about the importance of oral health among kids. The goal is to help your little ones learn about oral health, and develop good dental hygiene habits at an early age. We want to help them become mindful of paying regular visits to the dentist. It is so important to us and the ADA that we help ensure that children can look forward to a lifetime with healthy teeth and gums.
Here's a brief look at the history of the National Children's Dental Health Month:
- A simple one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio on February 3, 1941 serves as the annual celebration's earliest roots.
- On February 8, 1949, the first national observance of Children's Dental Health Day by the American Dental Association took place.
- By 1955, the one-day event had become a week-long observance. When 1981 rolled around, the program transformed into the month-long observance being held annually today, and it now boasts of nationwide coverage rather than its original D.C. reach.
Each year, the American Dental Association sends out messages to spread the word about the event's significance to its armed services bases. Local dental communities then organize all kinds of events to further deliver the message to consumers. Museum exhibits, health fairs, coloring and essay contests, free dental screenings, and classroom presentations are just a few examples of the activities that take place during this special month.
The 2017 National Children's Dental Health Month slogan is "Choose Tap Water for a Sparkling Smile.” Posters will carry the message “I Love Tap Water” and can serve as helpful aids for teachers and other key figures in the dental community to teach everyone about the importance of dental checkups and positive practices that focus on taking care of children’s dental health.
