Do You Suffer from Dry Mouth?

Do you find yourself constantly needing to “wet your whistle”? We don’t love that term but often hear patients use it. What if we told you that dry mouth can increase your risk of getting a cavity? Yes, that’s right, saliva actually acts as a cleansing agent to your teeth throughout the day and at night. It is super important in keeping your tissues from drying out and your teeth free from cavities. Our Dental Reflections Dublin team is here to tell you about the causes of dry mouth, the symptoms and the solutions.

Causes

There are a variety of causes to dry mouth. There are over 1,800 commonly prescribed medications that list dry mouth as a side effect. This is the most common cause we see. Diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and other diseases also can cause dry mouth. Autoimmune diseases such as Sjogren’s Syndrome and HIV/AIDS cause dry mouth as well. Alcohol and tobacco users and patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments have decreased saliva production causing dry mouth.

Common symptoms of dry mouth include the following:

  • Sticky, dry feeling in the mouth or throat
  • Frequent thirst
  • A dry, red, raw tongue
  • Hoarseness, dry nasal passages, sore throat
  • Bad breath
  • Sores in the mouth, dry, cracked lips

Solutions

There are many OTC products that can significantly help with dry mouth. Colgate Hydris mouth rinse is a wonderful option. We have had great feedback from patients saying the taste is good and that they really notice a difference. Biotene also offers a great line of products including mouth rinse, toothpaste, and gel to coat the tissues in the mouth. Sugar-free gum, mints, and candy with xylitol are a great option as well. Sugar-free is key. Often times, people with dry mouth carry hard candies around with them that are NOT sugar-free and this will cause an even higher risk of decay!! They also make tablets that can actually stick to your molar tooth on the top to help increase saliva production while you sleep. Another great product that is available by prescription only is Prevident Dry Mouth toothpaste. This has added ingredients to help with dry mouth but also has extra fluoride to help battle the higher decay rate.
