Tooth Extractions
We always aim to preserve and maintain your natural teeth. However, in some cases, removing a tooth is the best option for your overall oral health. We strive to make the extraction process as comfortable as possible, allowing you to focus on a speedy recovery.
The Process of Tooth Extraction
After your tooth extraction, we will ensure you are comfortable using anesthesia. The most important part of the process is the recovery. Controlling the bleeding and promoting proper healing after the extraction is crucial. This involves biting down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes to form a blood clot, which should not be disturbed for the next 24 hours. We recommend using an ice pack on the outer cheek to reduce swelling. Once the swelling has subsided, a warm compress can be used for comfort. Also, rinsing with warm salt water can help keep the extraction area clean.

How can I avoid dry socket after tooth extraction?
When you have a tooth extracted, you develop a blood clot shortly after the surgery to begin the healing process. If this blood clot becomes dislodged before your mouth has fully healed it can cause pain, this is called dry socket.
Tips for Avoiding Dry Socket
- Avoid straws or anything that creates a suction movement of air and cheek muscles.
- Do not consume any tobacco products. Smoking tobacco results in fast inhalation that can dislodge your blood clot and the chemicals may prevent healing or cause an infection.
- Eat soft foods only like applesauce, yogurt, and mashed potatoes for the first one or two days.
- Inquire about any medicines you’re taking to ensure they don’t interact with the healing process.
- Use proper oral hygiene to keep your mouth clean and consider an antibacterial mouthwash.
- Follow your doctor’s instructions on proper oral care to improve recovery time.

When and why are wisdom teeth removed?
Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that typically develop in the very back of the mouth. They usually emerge in a person’s late teens or early twenties. Most people have their wisdom teeth removed because they often grow in at an angle, potentially causing crowding and impacting neighboring teeth due to lack of space. About 85% of adults end up having their wisdom teeth removed.

What causes the need for tooth extraction?
Tooth extraction is the process of removing a tooth from its socket in the bone. It is usually necessary when a tooth is broken or damaged by decay and cannot be repaired using a filling or crown.
There are other reasons for tooth extraction, such as extra teeth blocking others, baby teeth that have not fallen out in time for permanent teeth to come in, the need for braces, or the removal of wisdom teeth for medical reasons.
