Dental Products We Recommend

Going down the dental isle at the store is always overwhelming. We often get asked what the best dental products out there are. Honestly, when it comes down to it, it’s mostly personal preference. However, depending on the needs of the individual, there may be some specific recommendations for their dental products. Whether you tend to have more sensitivity, staining, or want that minty fresh taste, we’ve got the scoop on products.

Toothpaste

Toothpaste is the most common product we get asked about. What’s the best for your teeth? What do we recommend? If a patient tends to have more day to day sensitivity to temperatures, we recommend a toothpaste with potassium nitrate. This ingredient helps block the tubules in the teeth that lead to the nerve and cause the sensitivity.

The most common brand with this ingredient is Sensodyne, however, most other brands like Colgate and Crest have come out with their own brands as well. We always recommend a toothpaste with fluoride. This will be listed under the active ingredients. Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps strengthen the enamel on teeth and prevent cavities.

We love several brands that we recommend including Crest, Colgate, Arm and Hammer, Hello, Toms, and Sensodyne. All of these also have their own whitening versions that are great to use for daily surface stains from coffee, tea, dark sodas or wine. You honestly can’t go wrong with toothpaste. It’s more about the technique you are using to brush off the plaque vs. the toothpaste itself.

Floss

Floss is a very important part to your dental hygiene regimen. The good thing is, once a day is sufficient and we don’t really care when. Sure, nighttime is the most beneficial, but we won’t be mad if you floss in the morning or midday. You are still disrupting and removing the bacteria and plaque that has settled below the gumline that your toothbrush can’t reach.

Cocofloss is one of our favorite types of floss. It has a specific texture to help grab ahold of more plaque and bacteria while you are using it. Glide is great for tight contacts. Waxed is the most common floss used and is typically made by every brand out there. The string floss is going to best vs. the picks due to better adaptation around the tooth itself.

Mouthwash

You will be surprised to hear that every mouthwash is not the same. This is the one we are probably the pickiest about. Listerine has its proprietary essential oils that distinguish it from the knock-off brands. The blues and greens are the antibacterial rinses, while the purple has fluoride in it. If someone tends to have more bleeding gums and inflammation, we will recommend the blue/green ones. If someone tends to get more cavities, the purple will be best for them. ACT fluoride rinse is also a great option and comes in fun fruit flavors as well.

If you ever have any questions about what type of toothbrush, toothpaste, floss or rinses to buy, do not hesitate to ask us.
